The Lunar New Year, Year of the Dog, was celebrated in many of our parishes and communities in San Francisco and throughout California.

This was the 27th Annual Chinese New Year celebration coordinated by the archdiocese’s Office of Chinese Ministry and was held on Feb. 24, 2018 at St Mary Catholic Cathedral with more than 500 faithful attending. The afternoon included a ritual dance venerating the memory of ancestors and a fundraising banquet in the hall under the Cathedral.

“In celebrating the Lunar New Year, we may promote Chinese cultural traditions and manifest the love of Christ”, Father Peter SVD, archdiocesan director of Chinese ministry, said. “We express our gratitude towards God at the joyful celebrations of the New Year of the Dog.”

Fr. Peter said he was thankful for those in the Chinese Catholic community who helped organize the event. “I am really inspired by the faithfulness and dedication to Chinese ministries and to spreading the Gospel of love to all people”, he said.

The principal celebrant was the Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone and concelebrated by three bishops, many priests, and deacons.

Our confrere Anthony also organized a celebration in San Diego for the Chinese community that he leads. The Mass of New Year was presided by Bishop John Dolon, the Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego, with several priests concelebrating.
