The Chapter Statement expounds upon the theme of the chapter in three sections: (I) The Love of Christ Impels Us: Experience of Love; (II) Rooted in the Word: Discernment; and (III) Committed to His Mission: Witnessing to Renewal and Transformation.

The reflections and vision presented in the three short chapters all demonstrate that ultimately, the mission of the Society of the Divine Word lies in its very name.

Our Name is our Mission

In the conclusion, it is written: “OUR NAME IS OUR MISSION. This name is challenging us today to do our task. We are invited to be in touch with our experiences of life and to be rooted in the Word today; the Word manifests itself in various forms, places, persons and realities. Discovering the Word is an exercise that animates our life.”

The extent that the commitments—both ad intra and ad extra—that have been articulated in the chapter statement will bear fruits will greatly depend on our rootedness in the Word and our response to the love of Christ, which impel us to build dynamic intercultural communities that are engaged with the Word and with the world.

As Father General Superior reminded the capitulars in his opening Mass homily, “In any discernment and renewal process we might need to keep in mind that our spirituality and prayer life need to be always challenged by the world and life that is there outside our walls and frontiers. This is a call to grow ever closer to the Triune God, and at the same time closer to the people and the world.”

As the general chapter concluded, it is the hope of the capitulars that the spirit of interculturality, renewal and transformation that pervaded the entire chapter would be carried on in the PRMs as each PRM engages with the document and applies its overarching vision to the local realities in creative and spirit-filled ways.
