This year marks the 125th anniversary of the arrival of the first Divine Word Missionaries in Brazil.

On March 12, 1895, the first two SVD Missionaries, Fr. Francis Tollinger and Fr. Francis Dold, arrived in Vitória, the capital of Espirito Santo State. They came to provide religious assistance to the German and Austrian colonies in that state. On March 19, 1895, on the Feast of St. Joseph, the first Mass was celebrated in Tirol. That began the SVD missionary activities.

In the beginning, the presence of the SVD was concentrated in the southern part. The situation changed when the SVD took charge of many parishes and various apostolates. Today, more than 200 priests and Brothers work in 15 out of 26 States and the Federal District.

In Brazil, our confreres are present and active in parishes both in rural and urban areas. Our dialogue partners in the rural parishes are the landless and new settlers. In the urban parishes, the preferential dialogue partners are the poor and unemployed.  Some of our SVD parishes also serve as bases for mission outreach to indigenous peoples and minority ethnic groups. The SVDs are also engaged in defense of the natural environment, in the Afro-Brazilian ministry, and the “Pastoral da Terra.”

They are also committed to the street dwellers, communication apostolate, formation, and school apostolate. Some of our confreres are involved in the biblical apostolate. They offer biblical courses and workshops for religious and laity in Brazil and other parts of Latin America.

One hundred and twenty-five years have passed since the humble beginnings of the SVDs in Brazil. The mission territory entrusted to the SVDs in 1895 has today developed. It has become the ecclesiastical Provinces of Brazil North (BRN) founded in 1895, Brazil South in 1940, Brazil Central (BRC) in 1968, and Amazon Region (BRA) in 1990.

More than 120 Brazilian confreres are working in the country, and some are doing missionary work abroad. Brazil celebrates this milestone on September 8, the Foundation day of our Society. As we look back with gratitude and forward in hope, we ask God’s continued blessing upon our confreres, our collaborators, and our missionary activities. We build up together God’s everlasting Kingdom so that the “Heart of Jesus may live in the hearts of all people.”
