Divine Word Missionaries in this Southeast Asian nation, one of our newest mission countries, have undertaken a housing project to benefit the poorest of the poor. New homes are being built in the three villages of Sanpya, Talokone and Packon, which come under the jurisdiction of Sacred Heart Church in Hmawbi, a Divine Word parish.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people in Myanmar lost their jobs and returned to their home villages. In visiting these families, Father Tuyen Nguyen SVD saw that their most urgent need is having an adequate and decent place to live. The families live in houses made out of straw and scraps of aluminum roofing. The homes have no running water or electricity. Without an income, these families are unable to do the necessary repairs.

Divine Word Missionaries are shouldering the expenses for both for the materials and the labor to build the new homes. Three small houses of a proposed 25 have been completed, with another 10 under construction. Fr. Tuyen is managing the project. A ceremony recently took place to bless the three completed houses. Jesus invites us to love others as ourselves, not just in words but in concrete action. Helping those in need is one way of putting our love and faith in action.
